WHAT DID YOU DO THIS WEEKEND?
FOOL-PROOF RESPONSES THAT ILLICIT NO FURTHER QUESTIONS
It's the first day back after a long weekend, and someone is about to ask what you did. But what if you didn’t do anything? You need an answer that’s better than “Um, I watched OFFICE RERUNS ON TUBI! So here are responses guaranteed to make you sound interesting and busy.
SOUND BUSY BUT PROVOKE NO FOLLOW UP
“We had some stuff with the kids.” Universally understood. No one wants to hear about stuff with kids. EVER!
“We were helping my parents with something.” Vague enough to imply obligation and maybe health issues, no one will pry.
“Honestly? We just tried to decompress.” You’ve signaled that you’re someone who needs to decompress. If they ask you a question, they risk messing up your whole decompressed state.
“Ugh! It was kind of a whole thing.” You put them on the defensive for even bringing it up. A “thing” could be anything. No one wants to know what the thing was.
“My back was acting up.” Medical. Personal. Done. They’re already thinking about their own back and/or health issues.
“I feel like I blinked and it was over.” Signals you’re deep and has them contemplating their entire life.
BUSY BUT MORE INTERESTING
“We had some people over.” And apparently you didn't make the cut, their guilt about not being invited will shut down and further questions.
“We ended up at this (ART) thing in (WEIRD PART OF TOWN).” Shows you’re interesting. Tone is key, be dismissive of the thing and you might even get a laugh out of the other person.
“It got a little out of hand, honestly.” Out of hand HOW? They want to ask. They won’t. Too risky for them.
“There was a whole situation with (MUTUAL FRIEND’S NAME)… I don’t want to betray their trust.” Shows you are a good friend and also no follow ups.
YOU’RE TOO COOL
“We ended up driving somewhere, just kind of on a whim.” A WHIM. You are spontaneous. You are free. You watched Threat Level Midnight twice but they don’t know that.
“I reconnected with someone I hadn’t talked to in years. It was actually really nice.” Emotional depth. Mystery. A hint of backstory. This is a full Hallmark movie in one sentence.
“We found this place. I don’t even know how to describe it.” You’ve been somewhere indescribable. You are a person of taste and discovery.
“We stayed off our phones mostly.” You are EVOLVED. You are PRESENT. You make them feel badly for being on their phones.
“It was one of those rare weekends where you actually feel rested after.” What’s your secret..You’re fucking cool, that’s what!

“Friday night we went out and found this great bar in [unexpected part of your big city] but when we tried to go back Saturday we couldn’t remember what it was called or how we got there so we just went to [your regular place].
My goodness. I have said all of these at some point.
